X is for X-Rated: Having Fun with Food!

Today was perhaps one of the hardest letters to work  in relation to food. X, what does one do with X? The first thought came to mind was X for X-treme foods. But as my dear friend eatlocalorlando pointed out ” Extreme starts with E”. Oh well, back to square one.. So I was stuck without a theme for today’s challenge. Finally, it dawned on me that I recently made a cake which some people may consider X-Rated.

Even though, this is quite out of the box even for me; the amusing reactions I had from my friends and family while creating this cake made  it  worth sharing with my readers. Now I am not a baker per se, my expertise lies in savory dishes. Though, I do make petite desserts, I haven’t ever played with fondant. Now, I appreciate the beauty of fondant cakes but rarely have I eaten one which tastes good too.  I do enjoy looking at beautiful food, that said personally for me, taste is the only criteria that matters. How do I make my cake not only good, but taste delicious too?

Eventually I decided on creating two flavors for the cake and then decorating it with fondant so that I can please both the chocoholics and the basic sweet lovers. This was my very first attempt at working with fondant, but it wasn’t as difficult as I anticipated. Honestly, the hardest part was carving the ‘perfect’ hourglass figure and trying to replicate the skin tone. Whew! What an achievement. The flavors I chose for the cake were Lemon Cake with Lemon Meringue Icing and a Dark Chocolate Cake with Lemon Meringue Icing.

If you are in a mood to play around with your food, shoot me a comment and I will email the recipe and tricks of this particular recipe.

The best part about making this cake was the fun my friends and I had while trying to carve, color, and mold this cake and all the giggles when we revealed the birthday cake. After all, it was a surprise! It certainly turned out to be a great day in spite of my nervousness, hesitation, and the countless hours we spent trying to create the perfect X-Rated Cake!!

A big thank you and special mention to my dearest friends Callie and Ripa, without them this cake would have just been a dream!!

  1. Wow!! I will love to bake and make this cake for my sweetie’s birthday next weekend.

  2. Until you told me it was a cake, I was prepared to think it was a butternut squash- now there’s an idea! I’m trying to visit all the A-Z Challenge Blogs in April. My alphabet is at myqualityday.blogspot.com
