Wines to Make Mother’s Day Extra Special!

MOM is a three-letter word that inspires limitless love and devotion. This Mother’s Day, we toast the remarkable women who shape our lives.

We asked fellow wine experts what they are pouring for their moms 🫶🥂🍷

Ekta aka @awesommom_ekta Canada

For Mother’s Day, I would pour the 2018 Domaine Weinbach Cuvée Laurence Gewürztraminer from Alsace, an elegant, aromatic white that embodies both warmth and sophistication, much like my mom. With layers of lychee, rose petals, and exotic spices, it’s a wine that feels both opulent and comforting, just like a mother’s love. My mom appreciates wines with personality, and Gewürztraminer, with its expressive florals and rich texture, makes the perfect tribute to her warmth and vibrance. It’s also incredibly versatile for food pairings, complementing everything from spiced dishes to creamy cheeses, making it a perfect choice for any Mother’s Day meal.

Beyond the wine itself, Domaine Weinbach holds special significance. This historic, family-run estate has been shaped by strong women, particularly Colette Faller and her daughters, Catherine and Laurence. Since 1979, Colette and her daughters have continued the estate’s legacy, demonstrating the same passion for Alsace’s great wines and unwavering commitment to quality.

Since 2016, Catherine Faller has been running the Domaine, ensuring its continued success. Their dedication to biodynamic viticulture and their pursuit of purity and expression makes this an especially meaningful choice for Mother’s Day, celebrating both the wine and the incredible women behind it.

In my family, alcohol was never off-limits. My relatives drank on occasion whiskey at weddings, rum in the winter, maybe a beer on a hot day but wine? That was a different story. Nobody really cared for it. It was just another kind of alcohol, nothing special.

And then there was me. Somewhere along the way, I fell head over heels for wine, turning it from a casual curiosity into my life’s work. My family supported me, of course.

One evening, while visiting India, I had a bottle of Australian Chardonnay with me. A rich, buttery, oaky one. The kind that wraps around you like a warm hug. I don’t know what made me do it, but I turned to my mom and said, “Want to taste it?”

She raised an eyebrow, amused. “Me? Wine?”

“Just one sip,” I grinned.

With a half-skeptical, half-indulgent smile, she took the glass, gave it a cautious sniff, and then, finally, a sip.

And then, magic.

She blinked, then took another sip, slower this time. “This is… nice,” she said, as if surprised at herself.

And just like that, my mom, who had never really cared for wine had found her kind of wine. A buttery, oaky Chardonnay. If I ever had to pour a glass for her again, I already knew exactly what it would be.

My mother has consistently provided unwavering support for my career in the wine industry.  To foster a deeper understanding of my profession, I’ve introduced her to numerous wineries, importer portfolio tastings, and wine fairs.  Consequently, she has cultivated a refined palate, exhibiting a distinct preference for wines characterized by precision and roundness.

A particular highlight of last summer’s Barolo Boys tasting in Monforte d’Alba was a visit to the Rabajà cru in Barbaresco.  Our dog, named after this cru, holds a special place in our hearts, particularly my mother’s, who considers him almost like a nephew.  We shared a bottle of Produttori del Barbaresco 2014 Rabajà (my preferred vintage) and a Giuseppe Cortese Barbaresca Rabajà.

My mother is the most exceptional woman I could have hoped for; brave, kind, and both firm and understanding with her sometimes challenging daughter.  I continue to rely on her, and my way of expressing gratitude for her unwavering support, her character, and the strong, passionate woman she has helped me become, is to share my passion for wine with her—hence, many bottles.

I sincerely wish all women could be blessed with a mother as remarkable as mine.

My mother loved her Moscato. She is like champagne but given the choice it was Moscato. She was introduced to it her in Australia as was a beer drinker . Come to think of it , her oldest sister drank whisky and mummy had her beer. Glad that I introduced her to Moscato.

Why did she like it ? It wasn’t dry and it went well with her Dorito’s!

I would definitely pour a Willamette Valley Pinot – preferably one with a little age. They’re graceful, beautiful, and complex – just like my mother.

Rashmi aka Indian Wine Goddess USA

There’s no one quite like a mom. I’m forever grateful for the remarkable bond I share with mine. She’s not just my mother, but my trusted confidante and most dedicated supporter. From childhood scraped knees to grown-up dilemmas, she’s always been there.

She is my first friend, my best friend, my forever friend. Her daily ritual when she is visiting us in Florida is one glass of white wine before dinner. She likes wine with fruit flavors, that are sweet yet on the drier side. What I would pour for her? A glass of Asti Secco, grape – Moscato Bianco from Piedmont, Italy.

What to expect from a bottle of Asti? Peaches, orange blossoms, mind altering aromas (like Piemonte’s other star white truffles), creamy mouse, laced with energetic acidity yet dainty, chalky minerality, and savory notes that reminds you of the gentle breeze which ushers in whiffs of your mother’s favorite perfume, enveloping you with her warmth and love.

I am mumma to 2 two legged babies and 3 four legged ones. I asked our daughter what would she pour for me? Her response: ” I would not pour my mother a glass of wine on mother’s day, I would make her a negroni. She loves them and she could probably use something stronger from all the years of dealing with me”.

Moms are the ultimate superheroes. Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing moms out there!
