Here’s How Orlando Culinary World is Coping Amid Coronavirus Pandemic. #orlando #covid19 #TheGreatAmericanTakeout

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.

I applaud Central Florida’s culinary community. These independent entrepreneurs have displayed such grace, creativity, resilience, and solidarity through these tumultuous times. Not to mention revamping an entirely new business model at lightening speed to keep up with government guidelines for our safety and health. Bravo!!

As per data provided by the National Restaurant Association, 78% of our nation’s restaurants are independently owned and operated. That’s roughly seven hundred and eight thousand restaurants across America, employing 12.1 million people. And within a matter of days, our beloved hospitality industry got crushed due to Coronavirus. According to Eater, in the food and drink sector, working hours has dramatically decreased by 40%.

Whether it is health, financial upheaval, or short-term inconvenience such as social distancing, Coronavirus is adversely affecting each one of our lives. And we are not alone. 192 countries are battling this invisible enemy, the likes of which our generation and our children have never witnessed.

That said, as restaurants switch to an only Dine-Out model for both food and alcoholic beverages. They are offering generous family packs, heavy discounts on wine and beer, crafty cocktails to go, and magnanimous discounts for medical and hospitality professionals. Including FREE home delivery, curbside pickup.

By supporting local, not only do you preserve Orlando’s culinary landscape, more importantly your contribution will allow these struggling restaurants and staff a fighting chance to survive, remain employed, in turn sustaining our local economy. (Majority of restaurant earnings are utilized in staff salaries).

Sadly, some of our favorite eateries have made the painful but necessary decision to temporarily suspend services. For the one’s which continue to brave the storm and provide tasty treats for our CFL families, here’s an updated list for your daily meal solutions.

While UberEats have waived their delivery fees to customers, they continue to charge hemorrhaging restaurants upward of 30% in commission. DoorDash & Caviar on the other hand have waived commissions for 30 days. I highly recommend calling your neighborhood restaurant to confirm their delivery options before using third party delivery services.

“Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.” – John Wooden

I know it’s not easy especially with little kids. We CAN DO IT! Think of it as an unplanned stay-vacation. Read that book which is collecting dust on your night side. How about cooking those drooling recipes you have been eyeing on Food Network? Perhaps try baking with your children? Or like me, you can use this down-time to spring clean your home.

This deadly virus does not care about your ethnicity, color of skin, age, bank balance, or political affiliation. The sooner we contain this highly contagious virus, the sooner we can live our normal lives, return to our jobs, and not loose any more income than necessary.

FOCUS on how you can assist in SAVING LIVES.

Why Social Distance: As per CDC, Covid-19 is highly contagious and carriers do not always exhibit symptoms. Social distancing includes NOT having people at home for get together or hanging out in your local bar. We ALL need to #flattenthecurve. For official Covid-19 updates, follow CDC website, Florida Department of Health, and City of Orlando.
